2024_Featured Pets

2024 FP Photo_ravenRaven needs a companion pet to show him the ropes and a family to show him it's all going to be OK!

Raven is one handsome, sweet pup.  Unfortunately, he came from a home where he was not properly socialized and learned to be very timid and fearful. We have been working with him, teaching him that not all humans are bad, and he is making great progress.  We have been taking him out and about to experience new people, dogs, and places.  He is gaining confidence and becoming a bit less fearful.  However, Raven has a very HIGH flight response.  On a walk, if he senses something that he does not like, he will do everything in his power to go home.  Including some rather impressive aerial acrobatics, followed up with backing out of his harness.  So, attention to him on a walk is mandatory.  He just wants to run. He has many admirers and loves to be held but will not approach a stranger and will bark at strangers when they enter his house.

Despite his fears, Raven is learning to be loved by humans and he is soaking it up.  He is a sweetheart and loves to cuddle on the couch with you and sleep in the Big Bed as long as there are stairs or a ramp to get on and off to prevent him from jumping if startled and hurting himself.   He may be okay to be crated at night, or just have a dog bed in the room.  He uses the doggy door, but in this Wisconsin cold, he may choose to occasionally go potty on a puppy pad.

PLAY!?!…Raven LOVES to play with his fur siblings and pack run with other SMALL dogs. Raven is an Energizer Bunny. While playing, he wears out one of his fur siblings and then starts with another.  So, he MUST HAVE an energetic, FULL-TIME playmate.  We think a well-socialized playmate would also help Raven learn good behaviors. He is not aggressive whatsoever. He loves his toys but happily shares. His future humans must have the energy to match his puppy-like energy level.

Raven is searching for that perfect furever home.   A home that MUST include someone who will continue helping him become the confident, carefree pup he deserves to be.  Raven will bond with HIS humans.  He will bond first with one, then slowly with the other.  So, patience with him is a MUST.  If you are looking for a "couch potato" dog or a dog to take to the park and you don't have the patience or skills to deal with a reserved pup who does not willingly engage socially, please pass on Raven.  His perfect home is waiting for him, and we ARE going to be very picky in assuring he finds it.

Our must-haves for handsome Raven include:

  • Someone who doesn’t work and is home a lot or works from home
  • Someone with time and patience to help him learn to love, be loved, and have more confidence
  • A calm Home
  • No children/grandchildren under 10 years of age
  • A fenced yard
  • A doggie door would be a plus
  • At least one young, small, playful, well-socialized dog for him to buddy with,
  • No apartments, condos, or high-rises
Please see additional details and photos of Raven on his personal pet page, here!

Needed: IVDD experienced adopter and an experiencegood doggo companion, too!2024 FP Photo_Drake

Drake is a retired breeder dog that came to us and 17 days later he had an IVDD episode that required back surgery. He did very well and with only 4 more one-week sessions in the water tread mill he will be able to go to his forever home.

Drake will be a little shy at first but once he warms up to you, he will be all about YOU. He loves lap time and spending time outside with you and helping with yard work.

If you decide you want to adopt this sweet boy, you will have to continue to protect his back so no other injury happens. That is why it is very important for you to read the following “must haves”:  - Someone who will not allow him to get overweight  - Someone who will not allow him to do stairs  - Someone who will not allow him to jump  - Someone who is home a lot more than not  - Someone with another laid back, adult, small dog to keep him company. - Someone with IVDD experience is preferable - Apartments, condos are acceptable

If you meet these requirements and you want to make Drake your forever dog than please fill out our online adoption application and/or reach out to foster mom for more details on him. See additional information and photos, on Drake's pet page, here!

2024 FP Photo_LadySimply irresistable! Who doesn’t love a frosty face?

Lady was dumped at a shelter in East Tennessee when her owner went into a nursing home and no one in the family would take her.

Lady does take a bit to warm up to strangers. She was scared to death when she came to us but after she had time to decompress, she became a happy, lovely girl. Lady loves sleeping in her fluffy calming bed but would prefer to be with you in your bed, of course.  She also loves to share the recliner for a nap or to catch the latest movie.  This little lady will even play a little if you have another small dog but mostly, she wants to keep your lap warm.  But first, you must give her time to learn that you are ok and she is safe.

Lady doesn’t like the rain or snow so a puppy pad would be best for those days when she cannot go outside.

Our must haves for this sweet girl are:  - A fenced in yard   - Someone home most of the time
- Another adult, small dog for her to pal around with  - No apartments or high rises as she will bark at strange noises

If you think you want to give this sweet, beautiful girl her forever home, please fill out our online adoption application.  We will contact you after we call your vet. Read more about her and see additional photos by visiting Lady's pet page, here!

2024 FP Photo_Obie and BellTogether, they found comfort in each other - now all they need is YOU!

Bell came from Tennessee, severely abused and unsocialized. Obie came from Arkansas, where he was abused but rescued by a Good Samaritan. When Obie arrived, he had no clue how to play, but Bell has gently taught him how to wrestle and play with her. They will run through the house or play in the yard together. It took a while as they both had to wrestle with their "internal demons", but through the process they bonded, and we, the rescue cannot break that up.

While they both have been waiting months for the right home to come along, we know that we may have to wait longer for the right home to adopt them together.

Bell will need time to trust her new owners, and Obie will need time to get familiar with the layout of the home and yard. And this little team will do it together! They sleep in the primary bedroom at night together in a doggie bed, never asking to come up on the big bed. When we must leave, they go into their own crates, which are located side by side.

We know this won’t be an easy adoption for anyone to take, but they are a true “rescue story.” Are you up to this incredibly rewarding challenge? You must have patience and know that in time, they will be the cherished pets they were always meant to be.

Our must-haves for his dynamic duo include:
- A fenced yard   - Someone who is home a lot or works from home    - A truly patient person or family (no small children)  - Not a first-time owner, must be an experienced dachshund owner     - No apartments, condos, duplexes, or high-rises

Please see additional photos and read more about this amazing bonded pair by visiting their pet page, here!

We have Dachshunds at our Halfway House not yet listed on this site:
Some of our rescued dogs just aren't ready for adoption yet, usually due to the need for

care of medical attention. If we don't currently have "your" special dog consider filling out
an applicaton anyway. We will process your application so you will be
pre-approved when your special dog does come in.
This way, you won't have to wait when you see the dachshund you want and he or she
will be in your home before you know it! If you don't see any dachshunds in your
exact location, don't let that discourage you! We have members and supporter all over
the country which allows us to have a wonderful volunteer transport system. We will make
our best effort to work with you on getting that special dachshund as close to you as possible!
